It is a deciduous, hardy tree, which can be 15-30 m high. The leaves are alternate, oval, pointed, smooth-edged and 5-15 x 2.5-6 cm. The foliage is dark green and shiny on top and light green and hairy on the underside. An old tree gets a strong grooved bark. The plant blooms in June and July with tiny unsightly green flowers with a large calyx. The fruits are lotus fruit or persimmon said. They are 1-2 cm large, cherry-like, at the beginning yellowish and shiny after they ripen to blue-black. They taste sweet and do not last long.
