Fig tree (Ficus Carica)

The fig tree, Ficus carica, has long cultivated. The fig is in fact one of the oldest fruits cultivated by man. Already the Egyptians, Phoenicians and Romans saw figs food, merchandise or remedy for constipation. The fig tree leaves are palmate (sometimes with only four or three fingers) and were already in the Old Testament appointed dressings of the chastity of Adam and Eve. Also in Roman history is called the fig tree. The manger in which Romus and Remulus were located would be stuck in the branches of a fig tree. This site was founded Rome.

A fig tree produces the best ripe fruit in warm conditions. In the tropics can be made three harvests per year. In our country is the fig best against a wall facing south. As one can expect two crops of which there is only one ripe. The ripe fruit originated in the previous year and overwinter on the tree as green peas. If this fruit survives the cold, he develops into a ripe fig in September. The second crop develops in the growing season, but the fruits are still green in the fall. They must then be removed, so that the energy is focused on the development of the "peas". Ripe figs can be harvested from October.
